We co-convene the Business Renewables Centre (BRC-A), a member-based organisation that helps prospective organisations unlock the benefits of renewable energy Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs).
As Australia transitions to a low-carbon economy, businesses and governments play a crucial role in decarbonising operations. Yet, navigating the complexities of energy procurement — securing reliable, cost-effective and responsible renewable energy — remains complex.
The Business Renewables Centre Australia (BRC-A) was launched in October 2018 by us, WWF-Australia and the UTS Institute of Sustainable Futures. The Centre is under licence from the Rocky Mountain Institute, who established the original Business Renewables Centre in the US. As a leading initiative for corporate renewable energy procurement, the BRC-A helps organisations unlock the benefits of renewable energy Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) — long-term contracts between energy buyers and renewable energy developers that provide price certainty, reduce emissions, and drive new investment in clean energy. Since 2018, BRC-A has been making PPAs more accessible, helping businesses mitigate energy market risks while aligning operations with net zero goals. Beyond the individual corporate-level benefits, PPAs have a catalytic effect on Australia’s energy transition by creating market demand for renewable projects, displacing fossil fuels from the grid, and fostering industry-wide collaboration. Through industry outreach, knowledge-sharing, training and buyer support, BRC-A equips businesses with the skills, tools, and networks needed to transition.
In 2023-2024, BRC-A expanded its impact by strengthening regional engagement, supporting social performance goals for renewable energy projects, facilitating a corporate buyers’ group and providing businesses with the insights and frameworks necessary to accelerate decarbonisation of both their operations and Australia’s electricity grid.
To expand access to PPAs and empower businesses to decarbonise, BRC-A has delivered targeted engagement, practical tools, and market intelligence. In partnership with the NSW and Queensland Governments, BRC-A hosted regional training workshops across Renewable Energy Zones (REZs) and key areas, equipping councils, businesses, and industry with PPA fundamentals — contract types, benefits, risks, and strategies for delivering local benefits. A similar program with the City of Sydney trained hundreds of small-to-medium businesses through CitySwitch and Sustainable Destinations Programs, alongside an earlystage buyers’ group project. These initiatives enhanced awareness and technical know-how, enabling businesses to engage in clean energy procurement —individually and collectively.
Recognising that community trust is key to scaling renewables, BRC-A has collaborated with Energetics and WWF-Australia to develop a Social Licence Performance Toolkit for PPA tenders. The tool includes case studies and a self-assessment checklist, helping businesses and energy developers align projects with Australia’s nature-positive and net zero goals, and setting the standard for better projects that add value to host communities.
BRC-A has also strengthened business decision-making by delivering its seventh State of the PPA Market Report, providing data-driven insights into corporate renewable energy trends, pricing, and opportunities. Through these initiatives, BRC-A is driving market transformation, industry collaboration, and Australia’s transition to a low-carbon, nature-positive economy.
When you become a member of BRC-A, you gain access to a wide range of educational resources, networking and partnership opportunities, and industry insights.
