We convened the Australian Ocean Energy Group, an industry-led cluster involving 35 Australian and international members across industry, government and academia. We worked to strengthen partnerships to accelerate development of ocean energy projects in Australia.
Ocean energy – a clean and almost infinite resource – has an important role to play in solving the global climate problem.
With over 70% of our Earth covered by oceans, Australia’s 25,780 kilometres of coastline provides access to hundreds of terawatts of untapped potential energy from its waves and tides.
Australia has the potential to be frontrunner in a new ocean energy sector, but demand for- and investment in ocean-based energy is still in its infancy in Australia.
The Australian Ocean Energy Group was an industry-led cluster formed to develop markets for ocean energy and facilitate collaboration throughout the wave and tidal energy industry. By leveraging its cluster structure, AOEG strived to generate national market demand for ocean energy.
AOEG’s primary aim was to accelerate the commercialisation of wave and tidal energy into Australia’s energy resource mix – starting by creating viable markets for ocean energy.
Connecting with potential end-users through demonstration projects enabled AEOG to identify technologies that directly address market needs and wants, including decarbonisation, electrification, reliability, safety and predictability of supply.
AOEG developed two ocean energy microgrid demonstration projects – one in collaboration with an aquaculture operator and the second in partnership with Discovery Bay Tourist Precinct in Albany, WA. Through these demonstration projects, AOEG was able to:
