Working across multiple levers of change

Project objectives

AOEG’s primary aim was to accelerate the commercialisation of wave and tidal energy into Australia’s energy resource mix – starting by creating viable markets for ocean energy.

Connecting with potential end-users through demonstration projects enabled AEOG to identify technologies that directly address market needs and wants, including decarbonisation, electrification, reliability, safety and predictability of supply.

Outputs

AOEG developed two ocean energy microgrid demonstration projects – one in collaboration with an aquaculture operator and the second in partnership with Discovery Bay Tourist Precinct in Albany, WA. Through these demonstration projects, AOEG was able to:

  • Demonstrate leadership in sustainability and environmental stewardship while exhibiting practical benefits of reliable energy supply to Blue Economy communities and businesses.
  • Model how utilisation of local renewable sources reduces the dependency on external energy providers, leading to fewer fluctuations and more stability in energy supply for ocean energy end-users (markets).
  • Identify socio-economic opportunities for positive changes in the workforce, including new jobs (e.g. specialist skills), upskilling from other sectors (e.g. oil/gas and retail energy) and expanded business capacity (e.g. expanded supply chain).
  • Validate the ability of the system to produce sufficient electricity to power desalination operations.
