Objectives

BRC-A’s vision is for Australian organisations to be able to access cost-effective, responsible and reliable renewable energy, simply.

Purchasing renewable energy shouldn’t be hard. BRC-A seeks to:

  • Increase the quantity of renewable energy PPAs by raising awareness about the opportunities for organisations to contribute in an impactful way to a zero carbon future for Australia.
  • Increase the quality of renewable energy PPAs by educating and building capacity within organisations and the market to supply and demand renewable energy projects that are about more than just green electrons. BRC-A wants to see Australia’s next resources boom deliver positive social, environmental and economic outcomes for communities across the country.
  • Make renewable energy PPAs simpler by connecting all the different stakeholders in the renewable energy value chain to build a community that makes deals simpler, happen faster and have more impact.

Why is this initiative needed?

Corporate buyers are not energy professionals and need help navigating procurement complexities of transitioning to renewable energy

  • Awareness: Many businesses are unaware of or unsure of their procurement options
  • Understanding: Energy procurement is not core to most businesses – it is a steep learning curve to understand how tools like PPAs work
  • Negotiation: Connecting with the right people is perceived as complex and opportunities to demand positive social & environmental outcomes are being left on the table ​
  • Deal/Post Deal: Buyers often underestimate the ongoing management of a deal and need support in leveraging its reach and impact​

How does BRC-A fill this gap?

These barriers are addressed through four strategic interventions:

  1. Increase demand for PPAs by explaining the strategic opportunity available to organisations and by recognising and promoting success stories that normalise and motivate action.
  2. Support organisations to build the knowledge and skills required to navigate the Corporate PPA Roadmap.
  3. Encourage organisations to demonstrate leadership by sharing their knowledge and insights with the next wave of buyers and by entering into best practice PPAs that deliver positive social and environmental outcomes.
  4. Support industry to continue to look for ways to iterate and evolve offerings to make renewable energy procurement accessible and simple.

Who we're working with

BRC-A was launched in October 2018 by three partners who themselves all have a strong vision and ambitious goals related to the clean energy transition, under licence from the Rocky Mountain Institute, who established the original Business Renewables Centre in the US.

Since becoming a founding member of the BRC-A, Transurban has entered into three renewable PPAs. The BRC-A is fantastic forum to not only learn the ins and outs of PPAs, but also to share lessons, upskill and inspire other organisations in renewable energy procurement. The BRC-A plays an integral role in both connecting and bringing new and informed buyers to the renewable energy marketplace.
