Australia will soon vote on whether to recognise Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in the Constitution through a Voice to Parliament. This is a historic moment for Australia to recognise the resilience, strength and pride of our First Nations people, and an opportunity to take a step forward as a nation.

First Nations people are currently absent from the Constitution, and currently have no way to ensure they have a say on matters that affect their lives. But First Nations peoples know and understand their people and culture, and they know how to deliver practical and healing outcomes for their communities.

The Uluru Statement from the Heart — the largest consensus of First Nations peoples on a proposal for substantive recognition — asks for recognition in the form of a Voice to Parliament which will give advice on laws and policies that affect their communities. This will ensure that First Nations peoples can advise Parliament on how to close the gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous people on education, health, and life expectancy.

Climate-KIC Australia stands for climate action. Addressing climate change demands solidarity and collaboration among all Australians. We must stand united, recognising that a sustainable future necessitates collective efforts. Solidarity entails listening to and respecting diverse voices, understanding the unique challenges faced by various communities, and actively working together to achieve common goals. This collaboration is foundational for the effective implementation of climate action that benefits everyone and leaves no one behind.

We are proud to formally support the campaign to implement the Uluru Statement from the Heart, beginning with recognition of the First Peoples of Australia in the Australian Constitution and a First Peoples’ Voice to the Australian Parliament. This is a vital first step in achieving a sustainable, resilient, and just future for all people in Australia.

By formalising and amplifying the voices of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and honouring their rights, traditions, and knowledge, we create a platform for dialogue and collaboration to improve outcomes for Indigenous Australians, and ultimately pave the way to a stronger, more unified nation.
