More than 3,000 entrepreneurs from 56 countries participated in the ClimateLaunchpad 2020. This year’s global climate competition took place online from 30 September to 2 October. Two Australian start-ups, Elevenstore and Localcycle, made it to the final round of the competition, securing themselves a spot in the coveted EIT Climate-KIC Accelerator. Elevenstore also went on to win the Theme Award for Sustainable mobility, which came with a €5,000 prize to reinvest in their business.

For the first time, an Australian ClimateLaunchpad entry has made it through to the EIT Climate-KIC Accelerator, by winning the Southeast Asian final of the world’s biggest cleantech competition.

The Climate Measurement Standards Initiative (CMSI) has developed a set of open-source voluntary guidelines that will, for the first time, provide Australian banks, financial institutions and insurers with consistent scientific and technical guidance on how to assess the risk of climate-related damage to their buildings and critical infrastructure from extreme weather events.

From around 50 Aussie entrants, three clean-tech start-ups have progressed to to the South East Asian Final, on September 18 2020 and hopefully, from there, at least one Aussie entrant will make it to the Global Grand Final on September 30 - October 2.

In January, The Cool Road Adelaide project tested how three heat reflective treatments applied to a 100-metre part of Bowen Street West work to reduce heat absorption, cool the area and create a more livable city. The results were compelling, with all three cool road sealants showing a reduced surface temperature relative to the control asphalt road – one by as much as 8.65°C during the day and 4.2°C at night.
